LED emergency lighting installation and maintenance Frequently Asked Questions

Emergency lights become invaluable when the primary power source fails, causing regular lighting to cease functioning. Whether it’s due to a routine power outage or a life-threatening situation such as a fire, these critical moments demand that both you and all occupants in your facility have the visibility necessary to find a path to safety. This underscores the immense importance of emergency lighting systems.

Regular maintenance will ensure your business is protected when you need it most, find out more about how often you need to conduct tests internally as well as the maintenance we can provide to keep your business and employees safe.

Where Should Emergency Lighting Be Used?

The effective deployment of emergency lighting can literally make the difference in an emergency situation. So, it’s really important that you not only provide emergency lighting within your business. But site it correctly too. Because poor lighting placement can be as dangerous as not using emergency lights at all.

These are the key points to consider when planning your emergency lighting strategy.

Exits and escape routes – Emergency lighting and signage should be used to clearly identify escape routes and guide occupants towards exits. If the primary exit is not obvious, you are legally obliged to provide an illuminated emergency exit sign instead of simply using the emergency lighting luminaire.

Areas that may be difficult to traverse in the dark – This should include all levels of all stairwells, and anywhere that the floor level changes within your business. Corridor intersections, and at any point that your emergency escape route moves in a different direction. Anywhere identified as posing a potential hazard in your fire risk assessment. And toilets larger than 8m².

How often should I test emergency lighting?

On a monthly schedule, in addition to the daily checks, it is imperative to conduct brief tests on all emergency lighting units to ensure they illuminate when the mains power supply is intentionally disconnected. Subsequently, upon restoration of mains power, it is crucial to verify the operational status of all mains healthy indicators. Comprehensive records of these test results should be documented in the fire safety logbook, and any identified faults, whether previously recorded or newly discovered, must be promptly addressed and rectified.

We do condut Monthly EMG testing for a lot of property management companies around the UK so get in touch with our team for further information.

On an annual basis, all the aforementioned monthly tests should be diligently conducted, with a specific emphasis on ensuring that the emergency light fittings remain illuminated for their prescribed full duration. This annual assessment is of paramount importance in maintaining the optimal performance of the emergency lighting system.

Is emergency lighting my responsibility as a business?

As an employer and manager responsible for a commercial building, it is crucial to prioritise the safety of all occupants, from your employees to visitors and customers. To ensure their well-being, you are obligated to adhere to various regulations aimed at safeguarding them against potential health and safety hazards.

These include the British standards for workplace safety and regulations pertaining to emergency lighting. It’s important to note that British Standards BS 5266-1 serves as the overarching standard, offering guidance on the best practices for designing, installing, and maintaining emergency lighting systems.

Our expert team are fully versed in this and are here every step of the way from installations to maintenance to ensure your business is protected and meets fire safety requirements.
